WE LOVE READING AT

MAREEBA STATE SCHOOL!!!

Learning to read is one of the most important things children will do throughout their schooling. Reading is a skill used in every learning area and is critical for student success. In the Early Years (P-2), reading to your child at home and asking questions throughout is the best way you can help them to develop as a reader. Reading is a lovely way for you to spend quality time together whilst developing your child's love of reading.

Text Box: READING IN 2023 AT MSS There are some exciting things happening with reading at MSS. We use what is known as the “Science of Reading” research when developing our literacy programs to ensure all Literacy Programs are evidence based, giving our students the highest opportunity for reading success. In Term 1 of 2023, there will be a number of workshops offered to inform parents/carers of these changes and allow the opportunity for parents to ask questions and build your understanding of our programs at MSS. These workshops will also offer suggestions around how you can support your child at home.

Text Box: TARGETED TEACHING An intervention program that improves student’s fluency skills. Fluency assists students with comprehension and is an important skill for students when transitioning from “Learning to Read” to “Reading to Learn”.

Text Box: CLASSROOM READING 3-6 Once students know the alphabetic code and can decode words independently, they then move onto targeted QAR (question-answer relationship) lessons in the upper years once again, based on their individual needs. Students learn to comprehend more complex texts and are now “reading to learn”.

Text Box: READING CAFÉ This happens every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8:30-8:50 in the Library. Our senior students, along with staff and community members volunteer their time to read with our younger students. All students who attend receive a milo when exiting and a cupcake after 10 visits to the Reading Café!

At Mareeba State School there are many opportunities for children to develop their love of reading, here are some exciting things we currently do as well as our plans for 2023…

Text Box: CLASSROOM READING P-2 Students participate in targeted small group lessons that focus on individual student needs. Students in P-2 start by learning how to decode words. Students also practice a range of other important skills such as fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Our students in the Early Years are “learning to read”.
